Mouth Morphemes in ASL

Kevins Mouth Morphemes 1 For the past 20 years, the United States and Canada have witnessed a rapid growth of ASL classes being offered to adults and children.   However, there is a serious void in the sign language curriculum.   The missing language element is mouth morpheme or mouthing.   Far too often, ASL instructors don't incorporate mouthing as an important component of their course objectives.   Mouthing is an essential and active element in language used among native ASL users across the wide areas.

Kevins Mouth Morphemes 2 In response to the missing mouthing element in the ASL classroom, DeBee Communications, in association with Kevin Struxness, developed the first-time ever videotape Mouth Morphemes in American Sign Language (ASL).   This hour-long video features 54 different mouthing movements along with their respective phonological meanings.   Throughout the video, audio and text accompany the signed acts with dazzling special effects for visual acuity and appeal.   The video is recommended for ASL students at all levels as well as for ASL instructors.

Kevins Mouth Morphemes 3 Kevin Struxness has had more than 15 years of ASL classroom teaching experience in Washington D.C., San Diego and Riverside. In 1994, Kevin was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Member award at Palomar College in San Diego. He is currently a Middle School teacher at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, and engages in writing projects for video production and publication.
